Absorbed Glass Mat Battery (AGM)
A sealed or valve-regulated lead-acid battery in which the electrolyte solution is absorbed into the woven glass mat separators between the plates. There is little or no excess fluid that may leak if the battery case is cracked. See Starved Electrolyte.
Absorption
A constant voltage charge mode for lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries where an elevated voltage is applied for a limited time and the battery regulates the amount of current it will accept. This is a topping charge to bring the battery to a 100% charge level. Also called acceptance.
Ambient Temperature
The average temperature of the surroundings of the battery or charger – usually air.
Ampere-Hour, Amphour (Ah)
A unit of battery capacity that is the product of the discharge current in amperes (A) multiplied by the time in hours (h) the load is applied. For smaller capacities, the milliampere-hour (mAh) is sometimes used to express capacity in terms of 1/1000th of an ampere-hour.
