Parallel Connection
The interconnection of batteries where all the like terminals are connected together, positive to positive and negative to negative. This results in increased capacity at the same nominal voltage. For example, two 12 V 10 Ah batteries connected in parallel will yield a 12 V 20 Ah battery.

Preconditioning Charge
A charge at a reduced current applied at the beginning of a charge cycle until the battery voltage has risen to a level at which a full current charge may be applied without damaging the battery.

Pre-Discharge
Before a battery is charged, the charger, or a separate circuit, discharges the battery. This is typically used in charge capacity analysis and when conditioning or exercising batteries.

Primary Battery
A battery designed to deliver its rated capacity once and be discarded; not designed to be recharged.

Priming
Some battery manufactures do not fully form their batteries before shipment. NiCd batteries will reach their full potential only after the user has primed them through several charge/discharge cycles. Lead-acid batteries should be primed by applying a full charge, followed by a discharge and another full charge. See also Initial Charge.

Prismatic cell
The positive and negative battery plates are stacked rather than rolled. The battery can be formed to fit many custom shapes.
