V
Valve Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA)
Refers to AGM and Gel Cell batteries typically greater that 30-50 Ah in capacity used in stationary applications. The batteries are sealed, except for a pressure relief valve, and can not have electrolyte added to them. The electrolyte is suspended in a gel or a fiberglass-mat, allowing these batteries to be mounted in a variety of positions. See also Sealed Lead-Acid.
Valve (One Way Valve)
When gas is generated in the battery under extreme overcharge conditions, due to erroneous charging, charger malfunctions or other abnormalities, the valve opens to release excessive pressure in the battery and maintain the gas pressure within specific range and then closes. The valve is designed to not allow air into the battery.
Vented Battery
A flooded battery designed with an opening to vent gases generated during charging. Not to be confused with valve regulated batteries, a vented battery is always open to the atmosphere and usually has removable filler caps so water may be added. If the battery is tipped over, liquid may leak out.
