N

Negative-Delta-V (NDV, –ΔV)
A charge termination criterion based on a drop in battery voltage, which occurs when a sealed NiCd or NiMH battery reaches the full charge state and goes into overcharge.

Nickel-Cadmium Battery (NiCd, NiCad)
A type of rechargeable battery having nickel for the cathode and cadmium for the anode and an alkaline electrolyte. They are sometimes used as a replacement for primary cells, such as heavy duty or alkaline being available in many of the same sizes.Used in a lot of older devices and still today in a lot of power tools for their discharge capabilities. Pollution from the toxic heavy metal cadmium is an environmental concern.  Nominal cell voltage is 1.2 volts.

Nickel-Metal-Hydride Battery (NiMH)
A type or rechargeable battery, similar to a nickel-cadmium battery, but has a hydride absorbing alloy for the anode and nickel for the cathode and an alkaline electrolyte. They are interchangeable in most NiCd battery applications and generally have two to three times the capacity and the memory effect is not as significant. They are also environmentally safer since they don't contain cadmium. Nominal cell voltage is 1.2 volts.

Nominal Voltage
The characteristic operating voltage or rated voltage of a battery. Actual battery voltage varies with use and age and will be higher during charge and lower when discharged.
