Temperature Compensation
A function of a constant voltage charging circuit that increases the charge voltage as the battery temperature decreases and decreases the charge voltage as the battery temperature increases.  This is to allow more effective charging at low temperatures and to prevent overheating the batteries at high temperatures.

Thermal Runaway
A condition where overcharging a battery  (or battery damage) causes it to heat, which makes it easier for the battery to accept more current, which causes the battery to heat some more, and so on. The condition rapidly builds on itself until the battery is destroyed.

Thermistor
A resistor with a value that changes depending on temperature. Sensing thermistors are used for measuring temperatures. Frequently, battery temperature is measured with a thermistor, either in a separate probe or incorporated directly into the battery pack. Other types are used for specialized functions, such as inrush current limiters or self-resetting circuit interrupters.

Top Charge
A low rate, constant current charge, following the main charge, designed to ensure maximum capacity.

Trickle Charge
A charge at a low rate of current, either constant or pulsing, to keep a battery in a fully or near full charged condition.
